USDT Networks Compared: Which One Should Your Store Accept?

USDT exists on many blockchains. Compare fees, speed and reach on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, Polygon, TON and Arbitrum to pick the right networks.

USDT Networks Compared: Which One Should Your Store Accept?

Tether (USDT) is the most used stablecoin in the world, but "USDT" is not one thing. The same dollar token exists on many blockchains, each with different fees and speed. If a customer sends USDT on the wrong network, the payment does not arrive where you expect. Choosing the right networks matters for conversion and for support load.

Why the network matters

A USDT payment always travels on a specific blockchain. USDT on Ethereum (ERC20) and USDT on BNB Smart Chain (BEP20) are both worth $1, but they are separate tokens on separate networks with separate addresses. Your checkout must make clear which network the customer should use, and your gateway must watch that network.

Cryptomo's checkout shows the coin and the network for every invoice, with a network-specific address and QR code, so customers pick the network they already hold funds on.

Network by network

Ethereum (ERC20)

The original home of USDT and the most widely supported network in wallets and exchanges. Its drawback is cost: when the network is busy, sending USDT can cost several dollars, which is painful for a $15 order. Keep ERC20 for higher-value invoices and customers who already hold funds on Ethereum.

BNB Smart Chain (BEP20)

Very popular with exchange users, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Fees are a few cents and payments confirm quickly. A strong default for most stores.

Solana

Fast and extremely cheap, with excellent mobile wallets. Ideal for everyday purchases and digital goods. Solana USDT and USDC both work on Cryptomo.

Polygon

An Ethereum-compatible network with low fees. Customers using MetaMask or similar wallets can pay without the cost of Ethereum mainnet.

TON

The blockchain behind Telegram's built-in wallet. If your customers find you through Telegram, USDT on TON makes paying almost frictionless.

Arbitrum One

An Ethereum layer-2 network: the same addresses and tools as Ethereum, with much lower fees. Popular with DeFi users.

Our recommendation

For most online stores, enable at least two low-fee networks plus Ethereum:

  1. USDT on BNB Smart Chain or Solana as the everyday option
  2. USDT on TON if you sell to a Telegram audience
  3. USDT on Ethereum for customers who only hold ERC20 or for large orders

Also consider USDC, the second-largest stablecoin, which many customers in the US and Europe prefer. See all supported coins and networks.

Avoiding wrong-network payments

  • Show the network name clearly next to the amount (Cryptomo's checkout does this for you)
  • Tell customers to choose the same network in their exchange's withdrawal screen
  • Keep invoice windows reasonable so customers have time to pay
  • Have a support process for payments sent on the wrong network; recovering them is not always possible

Frequently asked questions

Is USDT on different networks the same value?

Yes. Each is redeemable for $1 by Tether, but they are separate tokens. Moving between networks requires a bridge or an exchange.

Which network has the lowest fees?

Solana, TON and Polygon usually cost the customer less than one cent. BNB Smart Chain costs a few cents.

Can I accept USDT without holding crypto risk?

Yes. USDT and USDC are pegged to the US dollar, so their value does not swing like Bitcoin. Read more in stablecoin payments for business.
